Dr. Mihir Dwarkadas Joshi is a dedicated Ophthalmologist and an active social worker.
Dr. Mihir Joshi was born on 14 November 1941 in a freedom fighter’s family. His father Dr. Dwarkadas Joshi was a freedom fighter and true gandhian. He was also an Ophthalmologist having lucrative practice at Bombay. But on the call of Mahatma Gandhi to serve poor people, he left Bombay and settled at Vadnagar and devoted his whole life to the service of poor and in Bhudan Movement of Vinobaji. He motivated so many social workers with his work and ethics, our current Prime Minister Hon. Mr. Narendra Modi is one of those. P.M. Narendra Modi is also very well aware of Dr. Mihir Joshi and his social work.
Dr. Mihir Joshi obtained the degree of M.B.B.S. from University of Kolkatta in 1968 and D.O.M.S. (Diploma Ophthalmology) from University of Bombay in 1970. On his father’s advice and desire, Dr. Mihir Joshi decided to serve common men in the society. He had an opportunity to develop private practice but decided to start trust hospital with the goal “TO PROVIDE LATEST SCIENCE TO A COMMON MAN OF SOCIETY TO HIS DOORSTEP WITHIN HIS REACH.”
A hospital named “JYOTI EYE HOSPITAL” was started in a rented premises with a balance of Rs. 500/- ; only the consultation fee was fixed at Rs 3/- and cataract surgery charge were fixed at Rs. 50/-. Soon “JYOTI” became a phenomenal name in eye care services in North Gujarat and Rajasthan. Hundreds and Thousands of poor patients took advantage of the quality services provided in the hospital. Divine soul attracts divine people and that is how, over and above GENERAL Ophthalmology; RETINA, CORNEA, GLAUCOMA, OCULOPLASTY and PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY departments are established. Now the hospital has own FOUR storied building WORTH 20CR APPROX, with 150 indoor bed facility state of the art operation theatre with all super specialties and high teach infrastructure available. WHICH SERVE TO MORE THEN 80000 OPD AND 9000 IPD PATIENTS YEARLY WITH HEALP OF 10 OPHTHALMOLOGISTS AND 12 OPTOMETRISTS. Yet the charges are kept very moderate so that poor people may afford it.
Dr. Mihir Joshi, at the age of 82 years is very active and live wire to the institution. His journey of Ophthalmology is very interesting. Initially cataract surgery was done without intraocular lens and stitch. Then the era of intraocular lens and stainless stitches started. Dr. Mihir Joshi was one of the pioneers to bring this technology to Gujarat. Then again he mastered the small incision cataract surgery (SICS) which was without stitches. To remain up to date with knowledge he has attended many state, national as well as few international conferences at U.S.A., Japan and Rome. He has presented his work in many conferences.
Dr. Mihir Joshi has organized more than 1000 surgical camps at JYOTI HOSPITAL, Visnagar. He has attended surgical camps at and around Radhanpur from 1973 to 1978. He has also organized cataract surgery camps on every Saturday – Sunday for consecutive 15 years from 1985 to 2000 A.D. ALONG WITH Radhanpur Hospital. He is the pioneer and has attended surgical camps organized by Bhansali Trust, Deesa in the State of Bihar where lakhs of Cataract Operations were performed during 1984 to 2000 A.D.
Dr. Mihir Joshi is doing cataract surgery since 1970 and total number of cataract surgeries done by him is more than 3 lakhs. It is noteworthy that out of these more than 2 lakhs surgeries are performed in various camps at Gujarat, Bihar and Srilanka.
Dr. Joshi has been felicitated with many prestigious awards. Few of them are as follows:
1. Nilkanthray Chhatrapati Award 1995 for best service of blinds in Gujarat.
2. Dr. R. N. Mathur Oration in 2003 presented by North Gujarat Ophthalmology Society.
3. Dr. K. J. Nathwani Socio medical award from IMA Gujarat State Branch in 2006-07.
4. Award for best cataract surgery work for State Blindness Prevention Society in 2008.
5. Dr. Shivanand Adhvaryu Memorial Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Community Ophthalmology 2012-13.
6. Dr. K.J. Ganatra Trophy for Ophthalmologist by Gujarat State IMA in 2016-17.
7. Apperception for the contribution towards the field of ophthalmology by AOS (Ahmedabad Ophthalmic Society) in 2017.
8. Awarded for work in medical and social field by Government of Gujarat on 69th Republic day celebration by Ex. Chief Minister Shree Vijay Rupani in 2018.
Dr. Mihir Joshi is actively associated with several organizations which are working for social good. His involvement and activity in the said organizations are as follows:
1. He always supports dedicated social workers working in rural areas. He is a chief financial supporter in JIVANYOG ABHIYAN at Kevadiya colony, Narmada; where Dr. Ashok Gohil & Ms. Shobhana Malbari are working for tribal people locally. Their main activities are free health care and women empowerment.
2. He is the main supporter & active member of the health team working at tribal area of North Gujarat since 2004; along with Samvedna Trust-Virampur. All neddy patients are given free treatment either medical or surgical.
3. He is honorary trustee of Lokmitra (Trust working for tribal at Dhedhuki, Rajkot), Jatan Trust, Vinoba Ashram at Vadodara (Working for organic farming), Swamishri Pranavanand Kelavani Trust at Visnagar, Mangalbharati Kelavani Trust Hadol, Satlasana (working for Education)
4. He is a Trustee at Sarvoday Ashram, Valam (working for Khadi gram-udhyog, Education, old age home-Vriddhashram) and Jivanjyot trust (Blood bank) at Visnagar.
5. He is an active member of Rasthriya Andhanjan Mandal, Mehsana, Patan, Visnagar as well as Customer service advisory board.
Even after many more achievements in his life; he follows principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Saint Vinoba Bhave & Vimala Thakar & lives a very simple life. He wants to work for people till his last breath.
